Undergravel Filter

Definition

Undergravel filters consist of an airlift tube and a plastic 'bed' that fits underneath the gravel. With the aid of a pump or airstone water is sucked through the gravel where any residue in the water is trapped. The water, minus the residue, is then expelled back to the top of the tank through an airlift tube. The result is clean tank water at the top and dirt trapped in the gravel.
